Business services sector employees' job mobility. PerkinElmer case study

Summary: The purpose of this study was to find and understand the mechanisms of spatial and sectoral differentiation of professional paths of the business services sector employees in the context of the development of Krakow as a metropolitan centre. The author refers to the concept of "opportunity structure" by Robert Merton, examining the distance impact between the workplace and place of residence on employees' decisions about their employer's choice. Data provided by PerkinElmer Shared Services sp. z o.o., a company located in Krakow, was used for the purpose of the study. Research methods include, among others, codification of employees' profiles on the basis of data received from their CVs. The author's research results allowed to determine the employees' job mobility, the spatial and sectoral terms including the location of their universities, residence, previous work address, and industry relatedness of the previous employment. Based on the results, the author tried to estimate the scale of PerkinElmer's impact on employees' spatial and sectoral mobility and to relate it to the entire business services sector. Based on the research, the author has confirmed his findings with the key aspects of the "opportunity structure" concept.
