Behaviour setting theory - a proposal for use in research on public spaces

Summary: Environmental psychology is a discipline that officially appeared in the middle of the 20th century. Research within it focuses on the human-environment relationship. One of its trends is ecological psychology, which studies these relations in the natural environment of human life. In the case of cities residents, this is an urban space. Therefore, it is worth to consider to take a closer look at the methods used in ecological psychology to broaden the scope of urban analyses with additional behavioural factors that can provide a more detailed picture of the studied space. The aim of the article is to present the main assumptions of the theory of behaviour centres present in ecological psychology in the context of the possibility of its use in research on public spaces. The paper presents the genesis of an ecological approach in environmental psychology, examples of the use of the theory of behaviour centres and the doubts associated with it. The most valuable research considering the behavioural aspects that can be successfully used in research on public spaces is also highlighted.
