Konflikty przestrzenne wokół Placu Nowego na krakowskim Kazimierzu

Spatial conflicts concerning New Square (Plac Nowy) at Krakow's Kazimierz district

Summary: The last 30 years have been a period of considerable great transformation of Krakow's Kazimierz and its main public space - New Square ( P lac Nowy ). A former local centre of retail has become one of the largest entertainment and tourist areas in Krakow as a result of the economic transformation in the 90s and free market economy processes in Poland. It is an area of numerous spatial conflicts, caused by many social groups having different needs and vision of this square. The continuous increase in number of tourists, commercialisation of public space, transport chaos, and dominance of the entertainment function are just some of the reasons of these conflicts. The author points out the role of the city authorities in the revitalisation of deprived urban areas. New Square is a good example of a space where social and spatial degradation conflicts have appeared due to insufficient interest and proper care of city managers. Three conflicts were analysed in the paper : transport problems, tourism impact on local community life and the function of New Square as a market place.
