Słowa kluczowe (w języku angielskim): The aim of the chapter is focused on high mountain regions in the Baltic Sea basin. High mountain environment has specific features defined by Carl Troll. The presence of timberline (upper tree line) and a glacial origin of landforms are considered as the most important features of high mountains. The Scandianavian Mountains and Tatra Mountains comply with the above definition of the high mountain environment. Both mountain chains were glaciated in Pleistocene?: the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet covered the northern part of Europe including the Scandinavian Peninsula while mountain glaciers occurred in the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains.
