The Sanctuary in the Teachings of John Paul II

Summary: It is striking and at the same time meaningful that sanctuaries, especially Marian, play a very special role on the numerous missionary and evangelistic travels of John Paul II. They usually constitute a vital part of all planned papal pilgrimages. These are these places which the Pope visits eagerly, entrusting the Mother of God with his mission in a given country, the places where he celebrates the Holy Eucharist and delivers homilies, where, at the end of his evangelistic path he always entrusts all of the dioceses and people he has visited, their present and future to the pleadings and maternal care of the Holy Virgin Mary, the Queen of the Church, nations and peoples. One should also remember that the teachings of the 2nd Vatican Council, in which the dogmatic Constitution referring to the Church shows the Holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of God 'in the mystery of Christ and the Church', surely influenced the present Pope to undertake various pastoral, Marian enterprises. A brief Marian reflection, clarifying a great faith in the Holy Virgin Mary can already be found in the Pope's first encyclical Redemptoris Hominis. The Holy Father speaks about sanctuaries with a real predilection, demonstrating their numerous aspects, paying special attention to their characteristic features as well as historical and salutary meanings. He employs a certain logic here, expressed in the Latin phrase a visibilibus ad invisibilia, meaning 'from the visible to the invisible, spiritual'. Most often he first refers to the history of a given sanctuary, presents its geographical background and stresses its artistic values and then he directs the listeners' attention to its social and cultural meaning and to the very likeness of the Mother of God and the mystery it reflects. It is only then that he discloses the world of the lasting history of redemption and by exposing biblical or theological texts shows the Holiest Mother in her maternal and pleading function in relation to pilgrims. So, a sanctuary in itself never constitutes a primary topic for the Pope. It is 'a holy place and home' where one can experience a particular presence of St. Mary, experience the presence of the Mother of God and the Church who through the sanctuary draws very close to the people of a given nation who have come as pilgrims. Saint Mary in the mystery of Christ and the Church always constitutes a primary topic, clearly directed at the most important aspects of life: the belief in God and the achievement of redemption. When the Holy Father visits national sanctuaries, he always stresses particularly their historical role, both in the national and ecumenical history of a given land. This is usually his very first, greeting words or during homilies pronounced there. Such statements are always filled with enthusiasm, delight and joy with the visit itself and with the fact of being surrounded by the faithful. The Pope refers to the Marian Year and skilfully passes from the real, created world, the world of nature and mountains to the world of gospels and the spirit: 'these sanctuaries join the mountains of Italy in one, Marian piety, becoming a particular symbol of a spiritual wandering which the Virgin from Nazareth is an unattainable example; a wandering through which Jesus Christ the Saviour leads to impenetrable highlands of God'. It is hardly possible to collect and present all of the pronouncements of the Holy Father which show the spiritual dimension of sanctuaries. The Pope acquired his knowledge of sanctuaries not only from scholarly papers and literature but mainly from experience, personal contact, and his own presence. The life in a sanctuary pulsates with religiousness and Marian adoration. It constitutes an important centre of evangelization, liturgical rebirth, Biblical studies and, most of all, it is the light and the road sign for the faith of the faithful, searching for escape and aid in Saint Mary. Marian sanctuaries truly belong to 'the religious and cultural heritage of a given nation and have a great power of attraction and radiance'. They are the places where all faithful ones may lose themselves in prayer, together with Mary, the Mother of Christ not only in a liturgical prayer but also in prayers which result from various forms of folk prayers. They are holy places 'prayed by so many hearts for so many generations' and are a particular 'reservoir, a live treasure' of faith and love of 'God' s people' in sanctuaries.
